Sustainability
Making water go around has been our mission since our start in 1961. Our products provide people with access to the world’s most valuable resource and have done so for 60 years. Sustainability is in our DNA, and has always been the driving force in our business. As we grow our business, we remain committed to developing sustainable and responsible water and wastewater treatment solutions.
Sustainability Report
The need for clean water has grown in line with the planet’s increasing population. Standards for water purity have become tougher, and the need for water and wastewater treatment has been in a constant state of growth. We take great pride in delivering solutions that not only improve water quality and offer the possibility to reuse waste products, but also provide a reduced footprint, with lower energy demand.
In our sustainability report, you can read about how we work to improve our solutions and how we work to reduce our own environmental impact.
Our approach to UN Sustainable Development Goals
Sustainability is an integrated part of our business which impact our ability to create long term business value. We strive to be a trustworthy business partner by acting responsible and to operate in an economically and environmetally sustainable way.
You can find Sustainablility in all we do, from our design and development philosophy to the way we work with the UN sustainability development goals:
Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation
Goal 11: Sustainable citites and communities
Goal 13: Climate action
Goal 14: Life below water
Clean water and sanitation, ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
With world renowned technologies for sedimentation, filtration and process solutions, our systems offer water treatment solutions for industries and communities.
We contribute to the solution of water related challenges by improving the access to clean water and by mitigating the threat of pollution to life below water.
Our filtration technology can for example clean water from particles, all the way down to a particle size of 0.006 mm, and from nutrients sucha as phosphorus to below 0.1 mg/l. Every day, equipment from us process and clean more than 30 million m3 of water, corresponding to 12 000 Olympic sized swimming pools.
Sustainable communities with compact water purification solutions
Our water treatment solutions are very space efficient and can be operated in highly populated areas. Large cities with our equipment include London, Mexico City, Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore.
In India, Nordic Water DynaDisc filtration system is installed for water purification in several municipal wastewater treatment plants, providing high performance with limited space requirements. The saved footprint by using our DynaDisc filters instead of traditional sand filters in these plants is over 5 200 m2. Every day, equipment from us treat 1,840,000 m3 of water and capture 23 tonnes of suspended solids, which would otherwise pollute the recipient lakes or streams.
Climate action through energy efficient solutions and reuse of waste products
Our water treatment solutions contribute to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. Example of this is our customer case from Hommelvik in Norway. The mitigation of negative climate impacts was one of the deciding factors when Nordic Water was chosen to provide a new system which could exceed new and stringent effluent requirements.
The system reduces emissions compared to alternative solutions through design – with stainless steel tank solutions instead of concrete basins, which in production requires a much higher CO2 and energy lifetime footprint. Our Meva screens have a very high capture rate (>80%) but do not need any flush water and use 95% less energy than conventional perforated band screens. In addition, this technology requires less maintenance why the number of service vehicle trips is reduced. Read more
Life below water, with leading technology for water treatment and purification
We contributes to the solution of water related challenges by improving the access to clean water and by mitigating the threat of pollution to life below water.
One example is our early installations of DynaSand filters for phosphorus reduction at Sundet WWTP in Växjö, Sweden. The lakes around Växjö are very sensitive and the recipient calls for one of the most stringent waste water outlet restrictions in Sweden.
With post-precipitation in the DynaSand filters, reduction is 98 % of total phosphorus over the complete WWTP. The annual average outgoing total Phosphorus is around 0.1 mg/l, with a small footprint and lowest maintenance.
Our Sustainability strategy
As we grow our business, we remain committed to developing sustainable solutions
When we partner with customers, we deliver sustainable responsible products that meet the needs of today without compromising future generations.
The growing global population is driving demands for water treatment capacity and efficient use of space. Standards for drinking water quality vary all over the world and we strive to meet the stringent requirements.
We are not only providing our customers with higher water quality we also reduce our customers total cost of owning our products by:
Product durability and treatment requirements
Reduced footprint (required area of land)
Lower energy use
Possibility to reuse wash water and our products
Minimum chemical usage
Our service and maintenance offering ensures maximised up-time, purification and optimization increasing life-time and reducing TCO of installed equipment
